GLASS BEACH

Glass beach is the perfect sample for how nature can turn human waste into treasure. After long waiting finally i was arrived at this tiny-tiny beach in northern California. I made a visit to San Francisco, and from the city of the hills only 3-3,5 hrs the beach. I took the smaller and longer road so I can see the beach and a the mountains. When I have arrived I’ve seen a beautiful beach, we don’t have it on the east coast. Huge rocks sticking out from the ocean, and its just stunning.

So from the hills I’ve walked down all the way to the beach but … it was quiet disappointing. I thought I will see a lots of glasses, but there are no glasses I found. When I was walking around I’ve seen people picking thing up from the ground, so I was take a look closely and I’ve seen a lots of tiny mostly white glasses. many many many glasses along the tiny rocks. Its nothing like on the google you can find, but still interesting.

NOT SUPPOSE TO TAKE ANY…

This tiny glasses gave a fame to this beach, and take them is illegal. However there were not a single person whom not collected any of these colorful treasure. Maybe those big pieces are gone because of these herders moved them from the beach.

The Story of Glass Beach…

Since 1906, Fort Bragg established a water dump site and mostly discarding glasses, appliances and vehicles. There was so much trash had to light it up by throwing Molotov cocktails to reduce the trash pile. This was site 1. Later on 1943 they had to open site 2 because site 1 is filled completely. However 1949 site 2 was filled up as well so the dump was moved to north where now is known as “glass beach”. Glass beach was a dump site till 1967. State of California started a cleanup program to correct the damage that earlier they made. It was taken a several decades, where the metals, and other items were removed. The pounding waves broke down the glasses and pottery and tumbled those pieces into small, smooth colored pieces, and today these glasses covers the Forth Bragg beach.
